Acacia Waldorf School is proud to host the 13th Asian Teacher Training (ATT2014). The course aims to prepare Waldorf-teachers from the Philippines and other Asian Countries for the coming school year. In addition, parents and other interested individuals will find the course helpful in learning about the principles and practical application of Waldorf or Steiner education. ATT takes place in cooperation with an experienced team of trainers from the Netherlands.

The Art of Education

As teachers, each and every day we must meet the children in a new way. They learn, they develop and every day they are one step further on the path of becoming whole human beings filled with meaning and purpose. As teachers, we may help the child to find the next step on this path. To do so, we have to connect not only with each individual child but also with the class as a whole. We need the right inner attitude, a capacity to observe the child, knowledge about child development and also specific skills to manage the process. Thus, what we need is a new art of education to create new possibilities. In the morning lectures we will work on the different ‘tools’ a teacher needs to become such an educational artist.

Mentors

Malou Medrano is a practicing pediatric dentist. She also handles early childhood education at the Michael Playgarden in Makati. She is involved in working with parents and in training kindergarten teachers in the Philippines. She has also been active in the field of applying Waldorf approaches in emergency pedagogy.

Gea Weeren is a school psychologist. She works in the Waldorf schools and gives advice for children with special needs or those with learning difficulties. Before that she was a Waldorf class teacher for 15 years. Her specialties are moving games and the social development of children. She is also a trainer for high school teachers. In the Philippine course, she will work with class 1-2 teachers and will coach participants in moving games.

Lisette Stoop has been living teaching “Waldorf” for 32 years and is still very much engaged with it. For the last 14 years she has been teaching several big groups and has worked with school management. Now, she is focused on personal and social growth within the school context– called rainbow training. Drama and singing have become very important tools in her teaching together with story telling and humor. In this course, Lisette will work with the class 3-4 teachers and will coach participants in drama and singing.

Paul van Meurs is an educational advisor. In his daily work, he mentors teachers in their work with children and he organizes trainings and trains teachers in various themes in Waldorf education. His specialty’s are mathematics, movement, social development of children, art and didactics. He also coordinate the work of the pedagogical section in Holland. Paul will work with class 5-6 teachers and offer painting and chalk board drawing.

Martin Stoop has been a bio-dynamic gardener and teacher also for the past 32 years. At first he worked as a Waldorf teacher in the morning and as Garden teacher in the afternoon. For the last 12 years, he has focused on his hobby—traditional crafts like metal work for the upper grades. His experience includes working as a science teacher but later his focus shifted to these traditional skills as well as gardening. Nowadays he teaches young people how to strike copper, to forge as a blacksmith, to make cabinetry, to repair bicycles, to carve wood and to sculpt stone, and to model clay and wax. He is presently studying silversmith work. In the courses he will coach participants in woodcarving and modeling and work with class 7-8 teachers.

Nita Aranas is a hand-work teacher with many years of experience in the Philippines. She has worked with all grade levels and has been active in teacher training, working with those new to handwork. She teaches knitting, crochet, cross-stitch, puppet-making, doll-making, sewing, dress-making and other crafts.

Accommodations:

Arranging accommodations is the responsibility of the participants. Below is a listing of nearby accommodations at various price levels.

Transportation:

The course begins on a Monday morning. Acacia Waldorf School is approximately one hour from the Manila airport. Participants may wish to arrive the day before on Sunday. For those needing transportation from the airport to the course venue, kindly communicate your arrival times with the secretariat so that we can explore possibilities for group transport to the course venue for an extra fee. We may be able to arrange designated pick up times on Sunday afternoon and/or on Monday morning. It is also possible to bring a private car, or to take a taxi. For the daily commute to and from the course venue, there will also be shuttle service for an extra fee.
